Member of Parliament for Clwyd South, Simon Baynes MP, has criticised the Labour Welsh Government following the publication today of its proposed Local Government Funding Settlement for 2021-22, in which Wrexham Council is set to receive the second lowest funding increase in Wales of 2.3%.
This funding settlement for Wrexham, which follows the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, works out at less than half of the proposed increase for Newport (5.61%) and falls well below the national average of 3.8%.
Commenting, Simon Baynes MP said:
“It is a disgrace that the Labour Welsh Government in Cardiff Bay is planning to give Wrexham the second lowest funding settlement in the country for 2021-22 whilst councils in South Wales are set to receive much higher settlements. The proposed increase for Wrexham of 2.3% compares to an average increase in South Wales of 4.17%.
“I very much hope the Welsh Government reconsiders this poor funding settlement before the final decision is made in the New Year.”
