The Boundary Commission for Wales has now published its final proposals for parliamentary seats to be contested from the next general election onwards. The Commission is independent of government and takes into consideration population changes that occur over time, and has set a band of 69,724 to 77,062 electors for each seat in the future.
Given that Clwyd South only has 53,921 electors, it will cease to exist as a parliamentary seat and be redistributed amongst neighbouring seats. The wards of Brymbo, Minera, Coedpoeth, Bryn Cefn, Gwenfro, New Broughton, Marchwiel, Bronington and Overton will be placed into the expanded Wrexham constituency. Esclusham, Ponciau, Penycae and Ruabon South, Penycae, Ruabon, Johnstown, Pant, Cefn, Plas Madoc, Chirk North, Chirk South and Ceiriog Valley will become part of the new Montgomeryshire and Glyndŵr seat.
Two wards, Llangollen and Llangollen Rural, will be transferred into the Clwyd East constituency. Finally, the Corwen and Llandrillo wards will be moved into the Dwyfor Meirionnydd seat. These changes can be found on the accompanying map, with the current constituency shaded in purple.
As these changes only come into effect at the next general election, Mr Baynes will continue to represent all residents of Clwyd South until that time.
