Member of Parliament for Clwyd South, Simon Baynes, yesterday highlighted welfare provision and support for Armed Forces veterans in Clwyd South and the wider Wrexham area with the Ministry of Defence in the Chamber of the House of Commons.
Mr Baynes asked MoD Minister, Johnny Mercer MP, about the steps the Government is taking to ensure the provision of a high-quality welfare service for Clwyd South veterans during the COVID-19 outbreak. And he also called on the Minister to ensure continued funding for the local Armed Forces Liaison Officers, the provision of housing, and mental health support for veterans across the wider Wrexham area.
In response Johnny Mercer MP said:
“I’d be delighted to have a look at that. We have secured specific funding during this challenging time: £6 million out of the Treasury which has gone to over 100 Armed Forces charities dealing with the unique challenges of this crisis at the moment. I’m determined we will realise this Government’s vision to make this the best country in the world to be a veteran. I’d be delighted to meet with my Hon. Friend [Simon Baynes] to find out what we can do further.”
Speaking later, Simon Baynes MP said:
“I was very pleased with the Minister’s response. And I’ve already taken him up on his offer of a meeting to discuss these issues so that we can ensure Clwyd South veterans and those across the wider Wrexham area continue to have the benefit of the support of their local Armed Forces Liaison Officers and assistance with housing and mental health issues.
“Both my father and grandfather served in the Armed Forces so this is a cause which is very close to my heart. And I’m absolutely determined to ensure our veterans and serving Armed Forces service personnel in Clwyd South get the very best support from the Government.”
