The Member of Parliament for Clwyd South, Simon Baynes MP, presented the Plas Pentwyn Gardening Group in Coedpoeth with their 2023/24 Green Flag and certificate, during a visit on the 21st July.
The Green Flag Award scheme serves to recognise well-kept parks and green spaces which provide outdoor recreational space for communities both across the UK and internationally. To be awarded a Green Flag is a benchmark of good management and practices, whilst also recognising the hard work of those involved in building and maintaining these spaces.
It is the 8th consecutive year that the group, which runs the Plas Pentwyn Community Garden in Coedpoeth, has been awarded Green Flag status. They operate out of the Plas Pentwyn Resource Centre, an Enterprise and Lifelong Learning Centre on Castle Road in Coedpoeth. The community garden and orchard at the site are maintained through the voluntary efforts of the group, who use sustainable and eco-friendly methods that allow it to serve as a haven for wildlife as well as a space for the wider community. The group is open to all ages and abilities and is free of charge.
In the 12 years since their establishment, the group has hosted a range of school visits and community events, including litter picks, community growing sessions and craft activities. They meet on Mondays and Thursdays.
Jacqui Kearsley, speaking on behalf of the Plas Pentwyn Gardening Group, said:
"We are all very proud and delighted to have received the green flag award for the eighth year in a row. It's such an encouraging reflection of all our effort for the community and nature too. It was wonderful to see the green flag flying from one of the flag poles on site at Plas Penwtyn."
Mr Baynes, speaking after meeting the Group, said:
“It was a pleasure to meet the Plas Pentwyn Gardening Group and see in person what they have achieved to date, as well as helping them raise their new Green Flag on the flagpole at the Plas Pentwyn Resource Centre. The Group richly deserve the recognition they have received from the Green Flag Awards over the past eight years. I really enjoyed seeing the beautiful garden and orchard that they have created, which is a haven of wildlife. They have had a major positive impact in Coedpoeth, both in terms of providing a green space for local residents and for putting on free events.”
