On Monday 25th July, Member of Parliament for Clwyd South, Simon Baynes MP, visited Maelor Forest Nurseries to learn more about the organisation and meet with staff.
Maelor Forest Nurseries is located near Bronington, and is owned by BSW Group, and also has a site based at Darnaway, Forres in the Scottish Highlands. The nursery grows an extensive range of commercial forestry and native broadleaf species, marketing approximately 35 million trees a year to customers throughout the UK and Europe. In particular, they supply Natural Resources Wales with trees for the Welsh national tree planting targets.
During his visit, Mr Baynes met with Nurseries Director, Mark O’Neill, and Ben Goh, Commercial Manager, to discuss the success of Maelor Forest Nurseries and how they are helping with environmental targets. He was also shown round the laboratory where advanced environmental techniques for growing trees are being developed. In addition, Maelor Forest Nurseries has recently invested £4 million in a large forest greenhouse for improved tree seedling production.
Ben Goh said:
“Maelor Forest Nurseries is wholly committed to the UK’s efforts to increase forest and woodland cover and it was great to be able to show Simon what we do on the nursery. The Welsh national targets are crucially important and the engagement of all relevant stakeholders will be a key element in their delivery.”
Simon Baynes MP said:
“It was a pleasure to visit Maelor Forest Nurseries near Bronington and to learn more about their leading position in the tree nursery business in the UK. It was also fascinating to see the results of the large amount of investment they have made in advanced environmental techniques in tree growing which will ensure that Maelor Forest Nurseries continues to be a market leader in both tree sales and environmentally sustainable growing processes. I would like to thank the team at Maelor Forest Nurseries for having me to visit and I wish them every success for the future.”
