Many Clwyd South residents will have seen the ITV Drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office over the New Year. This has brought to life the one of the greatest miscarriages of justice that has been dealt with over the past years.
It is great news today that the Prime Minister has announced the introduction of a blanket exoneration, quashing the convictions of those wrongfully prosecuted.
This will clear people’s names and provide justice. This will also ensure swifter access to compensation, rather than wading through over 700 convictions case by case.
In total, £148 million has been paid out to around 2,700 victims with full compensation paid out to 64% of those affected. All affected postmasters have had an interim payment to date.
With the new Bill exonerating those affected, those with overturned prosecutions will be eligible for interim compensation of £163,000 and will have the option of an upfront offer of £600,000 or having their claim individually assessed.
I thank the Prime Minister for finally delivering justice to those affected and to campaigners who have worked tirelessly over the years.
