The Member of Parliament for Clwyd South, Simon Baynes MP, has today marked the end of Love Lamb week with a call for continued support for Welsh farmers amongst consumers.
Welsh lamb is renowned for its quality, with generations of families having worked in this industry. The FUW state that 80% of Welsh farmland is not suitable for the growing of crops. As a result, the rearing of livestock, including sheep, represents the best way to produce high quality food whilst preserving our beautiful Welsh landscape. The FUW also note that Welsh lamb is produced via non-intensive farming methods, with a focus on using natural grass and rainwater. Love Lamb Week, which ran from 1st to 7th September, encourages consumers to put lamb at the heart of their dinners.
Speaking about Love Lamb Week, Ian Rickman, the President of the FUW, said:
“Farming in Wales has an incredibly positive story to tell. With a focus on our Welsh lamb this week, it is fair to point out that our low-intensity sheep farms tell a very different story compared to production methods in other parts of the world.
Consumers are conscious of what they consume and how that food has been produced and our Welsh lamb producers can hold their heads high and be proud of the premium product we deliver. We farm with the environment in mind. Research shows that the way we manage our grasslands for example helps to offset carbon emissions by keeping it locked up in the soil.”
Speaking at the end of Love Lamb week, Simon Baynes MP said:
“In Clwyd South and across Wales, we take great pride in the work of our farmers, who work tirelessly year-round to ensure that the highest quality livestock is available to consumers across the UK. Locally, I am proud of our lamb farmers in Clwyd South, including Dolwen Lamb and Beef in the Ceiriog Valley and the Rhug Estate near Corwen. Love Lamb Week is an excellent opportunity to highlight the invaluable work of our farmers. I continue to encourage people across Wales to make lamb a part of a well-balanced diet.”
